Charlie was laying motionless on the bed. His large eyes seemed glazed over and almost opaque. At first the group thought this was a natural and temporary setback to Charlie's long and slow recovery. The tests indicated otherwise. Someone had injected several viral strands into Charlie's already weak body. There were no signs of a forceful break-in. You knew it had to be someone that had access to the research labs on this level. One of your collegues.
You considered the possibilities and one person stood out: Robert Spencer. You remembered how strangely he had been acting lately. He was subtle at first, but his urgency had eventually also lead to carelessness. At staff meetings he seemed more and more set against the progress of the project. He would often react angrily when he learned that the project was gaining importance, even in the higher branches of command. When more funds were allocated to continue the research Robert had openly threatened to use his influence to have the decision repealed. His behaviour eventually lead to his being assigned to a new department. Could he have...
Time was running short for Charlie. According to the tests he only had two or three days of life left. Your senses told you the situation was far worse. After countless arguments it was clear that nobody else was willing to risk their own life for the sake of Charlie and the project. You were alone. Fear, you kept thinking, was a purely natural response to the idea of being shrunk to the size of a single cell and injected inside an alien host. But it was too late too back out now. The ES-21 was ready... Everything was ready.
